Even Better after All These Years

With a record 125 individuals participating in annual 30-mile Hudson River Loop Walk on Saturday, June 10, 2017, we thank all who joined with us in this "UnitedWalking" event..

The weather held up in spite of forecasted passing showers in the afternoon which never materialized. The temperatures rose to the mid 80's. This year we added more signage along the way and a support stop right before the GWB bridge. Our post-event party was also a success at the new Lutze Biergarten along the waterfront near Exchange Place. Beautiful views in a relaxed outdoor atmosphere.

On the Jersey side the Hudson River Waterway Waterfront is nearly a complete promenade along the water right to the George Washington Bridge. The walk over the GW is itself a treat, and we continue down the New York Greenway all the way to the World Trade Center to complete the 30 miles. All with the Hudson River in sight.

Thanks to the progress on the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway on the Jersey side and the well established Hudson River Greenway on the New York side, it has been possible for pedestrians and cyclists to complete a loop, except for the use of the PATH train from downtown World Trade Center to Exchange Place Jersey City.

The event is free and open to everyone but we collect donations in support of the beautiful trails we use.

This is among the most highly rated of walks in the area and always draws a big crowd. Visit this website or Freewalkers.org later this year if you are interested in walking this event next year.

We will be posting the list of all participants in the near future when the survey is complete.

Dueling Grounds Detour

on Tue, 05/30/2017 - 18:41

In 1804, after a brewing history of animosity between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, they we met one final time on the banks of the Hudson in Weehawken for a fatal duel which ended the life of Hamilton and sent Burr's repuation toward a final downward spiral. The actual place of the duel took place on a lower ledge near the river, below a current monument to the duel. There is a placque of the event and bust of Hamilton marking the spot with a great view of the NY skyline.

lutze biergarten

Its brand-new and what a view!

In the past five years, the Hudson Loop Walk has varied its finishing venue from Woodruff's downtown to Bar A at the Battery. We've also tried a place or two on the NJ side for NJ FreeWalkers. This year we have a promising new venue right on the waterfront near Exchange Place, Harborside area called Lutze Biergarten .

This bar and restaurant, which will open on May 5 to fireworks, is an outdoor riverfront beer garden, serving a variety of German and craft beer, cocktails and various food options, including bratwurst, pretzels, pub grub and a raw bar, all while
